From graceful temples to flashy high-rises, from quiet museums to seamy bars, Thailand's polluted, traffic-choked, friendly, and open capital seems to revel in its contradictions. Remnants of a once-extensive canal system remain, offering transit that is often faster than a modern taxi. Tourism is a great draw, but Bangkok is also the financial center of mainland Southeast Asia.
