Bangkok, Thailand

Buddhist monks, in their distinctive colored robes, are a common sight on Bangkok streets. Their faith's temples showcase some of the city's most enchanting architecture.

CITY OF ANGELS

From graceful temples to flashy high-rises, from quiet museums to seamy bars, Thailand's polluted, traffic-choked, friendly, and open capital seems to revel in its contradictions. Remnants of a once-extensive canal system remain, offering transit that is often faster than a modern taxi. Tourism is a great draw, but Bangkok is also the financial center of mainland Southeast Asia.

ECONOMY

Food processing, wood, textiles, electronics, rice mills, cement factories, sawmills, oil refineries, shipbuilding, motor vehicles, jewelry, tourism.
